  HELLO !

Laventie (Pas-de-Calais), the capital of the country of lalloeu.

Laventie is a young and dynamic town. It had 4450 inhabitants at the time of the last census. Formerly it was the capital of the country of lalloeu which also included Fleurbaix, Sailly-sur-la-Lys and La Gorgue. This « free land » (the translation of Alloues) is delimited to the North by the Lys, to the south by the river of Layes, to the West, beyond the old Roman road, by Richebourg and to the East by Erquighem and Armentieres. Its quadrilateral shape is divided in four parts. The central point is called « The four parishes ».
In short the site of Laventie is ideal : 23km from Lille, 52km from Arras and 190km from Paris. It is not far from main roads (less than ten minutes from the motorway A25 Lille-Dunkerque). Its inhabitants (many of them are young and busy) and the firms that set up there, find all the facilities, infrastructure and spare-time activities of a town in the countryside, a modern one firmly looking ahead, with its residential aeras, its centre full of life and its activities all year long. More and more its quality of life is attractive. The preservation of the environment has always been a priority ofthis city. Here you can find rustic quiet, yet Laventie is not far from the big town of Lille.
Laventie is a very rural district. All year long events and festivals are numerous. Among the highlights we can mention the Cavalcade on the first of May. It started in 1948, just after the Second World War. People wanted to rouse the sleepy local life. Its success was immediate. Since then thousands of people have rushed from all the places of the country of Lalloeu to see the parade. In 2000, the Cavalcade is still very successful. Local and outside associations are called in : they try to ourdo one another in ingenuity : groups in fancydress, floats, bands...
Another important event is called « Laventie ville ouverte ». In September, during a week-end, some craftsmen show their workshops to people ; a jumble sale takes place in the High Street and an exhibition of regional produce attracts greedy visitors.
In October or november, Laventie takes part in a national action to lead people to read. It's called « The time of books » : the pupils of schools and Colleges and adults have to answer questions about literature and write poems.
Laventie is also involved in the « Telethon », a charitable organisation for myopathic children.
Moreover let's note the annual meeting with the inhabitants of Sümmern, a German town twinned with Laventie, the « Spring Cleaning », the cycle race « Henri Puchois », the motor race « Rally des Géants », two annual funfairs, evening gatherings devoted to local History, banquets for elderly people, charity fêtes...
In 1999 a « son et lumière » show was created on July 14th. It told the history of the city. It was very successful and a new one about music was presented this year.
Laventie, city in bloom, is situated in a charming and very green countryside. Tourists always get a pleasant welcome, French people or foreigners. Among these tourists there are our German friends from Sümmern, but also British ones who come and pray in one of the military cemeteries.

All of you, you'll always be welcome here !
